Mad Adjustment

Directed by GEORGE NOLFI
Starring MATT DAMON, EMILY BLUNT, ANTHONY MACKIE,
JOHN SLATTERY, MICHAEL KELLY, and TERENCE STAMP

This was a good movie, but not a great movie. I can't believe that this film was in anyway compared to Inception in the previews. I wouldn't mention this, except that the narrator of the tv spots for this film said it was better than 'Inception.' Huh? 'Inception' was groundbreaking, mind-boggling, wholly unique and original and one of the best films I have ever seen...period. 'The Adjustment Bureau' was just good. It has nothing on Inception, but it was fresh and interesting. Moving along, this film was basically 'Mad Men' with a supernatural twist. It was more of a drama than anything, which is fine. But if you're expecting an action film, then you'll be disappointed.
Trailer

Plot: The film starts with David Norris played by (Matt Damon) running for the U.S. Senate seat in New York. Unfortunately, due to a youthful indiscretion he looses the election. While practicing his concession speech in a hotel bathroom, he meets an intriguing woman hiding in one of the stalls, named Elise. Elise played by (Emily Blunt), encourages him to be brutally honest with the audience and for once leave the political mumbo-jumbo behind. Before leaving, David and Elise kiss and are fated to never see each another again, or are they?

The rest of the film jumps off from there. There are adjusters or guardian angels who watch over people, adjusting their fate. All the while the adjusters are dressed to the nines, in stylish Mad Men 1950's suits and top hats--nice touch. Another Mad Men touch is the Mad Men cast member (John Slattery) who plays one of the lead adjusters, Richardson. David learns of these adjusters and of the Chairman (a higher power) and so begins the film. If this film had been a bit braver and possibly focused more on the adjusters, then it would have been a great film. What follows is a fun, but predictable ride. Overall, this is a good film and worth the price of admission. It's definitely fresh and inventive in a land of stale remakes.

THREE -1/2 OUT OF FIVE STARS

  1. By the time I finally saw this movie there had been too much hype about it. I thought it was good, but not great. Because my expectations were too high I ended up a little disappointed in it.
