5 Days of Explosions

I preface this post by saying that I'm not a Renny Harlin fan, but I like some of Harlin's films.  I feel inclined to admit that The Long Kiss Goodnight and Die Hard II are a few of my guilty pleasures.  Both films contain ample amounts of 90's cheese, but are still fun to watch.  I also have a soft spot for Deep Blue Sea, which is one of Harlin's better films.  Harlin's latest film, "5 Days of War," is about war correspondents covering the Georgian conflict in 2008.
For the geographically-challenged I'm referring to the eastern European country, Georgia--not the southern state.  As most of us know there was an armed conflict in August of 2008 between Russia (with the aid of Georgian separatist groups) and the government of Georgia.  During the conflict, the Russians and the separatists were accused of war crimes and refusing humanitarian aid to Georgian civilians.
Needless to say the subject matter is very serious.  Therefore, upbeat rock music in the background and cgi explosions may not have the intended effect of the preview.  Leave it to Renny Harlin to "action-fy" a movie about war crimes.  Don't get me wrong, a movie on this subject is interesting, but shouldn't it be more Hurt Locker (or better yet The Killing Fields) and less Behind Enemy Lines?  The film releases August 19th and from the looks of it, will soon go to dvd shortly thereafter.

  2. I love The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea as well.

I think you're right in your assessment of this film going almost directly to DVD. A real-life conflict is not one that should be adrenalized.

  3. @Jaccstev-- Yep. Which is why I was surprised by this one. He hasn't had a hit movie in a while right?

@Melissa-- Thanks. I like the word you used to describe it, "adrenalized." I'll have to remember that one.

  4. Harlin really hasn't made anything good in a long time. He really did have a string of fun films during the 80s and 90s.

  5. @Dave-- I completely agree. The last good film he did was Deep Blue Sea.
