Torchwood Season 4 Debuts on Starz

After a two-year hiatus, Torchwood returns.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, it's moved from the BBC to the premium cable channel Starz.  As I am writing this, you can surmise that I've since been "forced" into purchasing Starz until Torchwood's season concludes.  I'm not particularly fond of Starz, but Torchwood was too good of a show to pass up and last night's episode proved no exception. They say go big or go home, well Torchwood season 4 goes big.  Not only has the remaining Torchwood crew moved to America, but the show's budget has grown tenfold.  Miracle Day starts as the world slips into chaos when people stop dying.  This may not sound bad, but it is, particularly when people get into horrific accidents, botched executions, and over-population.

The shows two remaining characters, Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) return to their respective roles.  The show also introduces some new blood, including CIA agents Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), Ester Drummond (Alexa Havins), and confused hospital doctor, Dr. Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur).

I dislike spoilers, so I'm not telling you anything that you can't see from the trailer.  The first episode was somewhat of a refresher for the old fans and a new dish for the new ones.  The episode suffered slightly because of the necessary introductions, but overall the episode was pretty good.  Fans who suffer from complete confusion should watch the first three seasons of the show, as well as the first season of Dr. Who (2005).

For a more complete review of the first episode see David Chute's article with Indie Wire.  His review is fantabulous and he gets into a lot more detail than I want to.  Happy viewing.

  5. It's been on the BBC for several years, but it took a 2 yr hiatus. It was a spinoff of Dr. Who.

  7. @Magixx-- Thanks. It is definitely epic. I've enjoyed it. I think the 2nd season is the best. It should be available on dvd. However, this new season is turning out to be fantastic.
