Several media outlets are reporting that a Point Break remake is in the works. You shouldn't be surprised. After all if they can remake Spider Man after just 3 to 4 years, why can't they remake Point Break circa 1991. It's 20 years old and that's a century in movie years. They've just about squeezed the life out of the 1980s, so the 1990s offers them a plethora of recycled material to force feed a new generation.
After all Point Break isn't necessarily good, but it's not bad either. Point Break is simply a guilty pleasure. As a young teenager, Point Break is the movie in which I developed an albeit brief crush on Keanu Reeves. So I don't really care if they remake Point Break, but the furious pace in which they are remaking films is repugnant. There are so many good books and great screenwriters out there waiting to be discovered. Why, oh why does Hollywood have to revert to remakes and sequels? Perhaps it's time for Hollywood to roll in the red carpet and wrap it up.

ReplyDeleteIt's painful, really, all of these remakes and re-imaginings. It's like they've lost interest in new material. Although, the new material all seems to be teen centric with yet another crop of no-name pretty faces. Maybe I'm just getting old because I can't tell the difference between the twenty-something's anymore. Kristen who? Robert whaa?

Ting Kubby-- Yep. There are so many up and coming writers out there. They just need to look in places other than California. That area has been tapped out.
Bonjour-- So true. I for one will try my hardest to not fall for the remake machine. However, Fright Night was admittedly very good.
Film Geek-- Ha, Once Point Break gets remade I think it's past ridiculous.

Point break is a favourite of mine, suspenseful action movie.
ReplyDeleteI'm ok with remakes-you don't have to watch them if you saw the original film. There are plenty of other releases.
Although I would agree its a pity new scripts get dropped in favour of a remake.

Wednesday's Child-- Ha, Gary Busey was awesome in that movie. It's one of the few movies in which he's coherent.
ReplyDeleteReal Queen-- So true. I know I'm guilty of feeding the machine as well. After all I did see Fright Night, although I got into Fright Night for free, but I gave it a good review. I had to begrudgingly admit that it was a good movie.

The most important thing that Point Break did was that it changed people's perceptions of Keanu Reeves. "That guy from the Bill and Ted movie doing an action film? No way." Speed and The Matrix might have never followed for Reeves if he hadn't done Point Break first.
