Immortal Beloved

I must say that I'm looking forward to seeing beefcake gone wild this Thursday. Henry Cavill is a little short for Superman, but he looks like a million bucks in Tarsem Singh's new film, The Immortals. This is also Henry's chance to prove leading-man potential before The Man of Steel.

For those unfamiliar with The Immortals, check out the trailer below. Tarsem previously directed The Fall, which is a visual masterpiece. The trailer shows the same intense visual style. Tarsem is also known for his Kubrick-like perfectionism. He told Henry Cavill, in no uncertain terms, that he didn't just want Henry to have a six pack, he wanted an eight pack. No exceptions.

Two casting negatives: The beautiful, but boring Frieda Pinto costars as Cavill's love interest. She's absolutely gorgeous...and a total yawn. I also have a hard time taking Mickey Rourke seriously in period films. Mickey Rourke in a loin cloth is an unnatural union; an abomination for the eyes. Before watching The Immortals this weekend, check out Tarsem's The FallThe Fall is mandatory viewing for any arthouse fan.

  1. I thought Immortals was a comedy at first but I've been told it's quite serious.

  2. Haven't seen The Fall yet, but I did hear it was depressing.

  3. Mickey Rourke in a loin cloth is an unnatural union - HA! I'm looking forward to this as well. I think this is going to be our Date Night on Saturday!

The Fall was visually stunning - and actually ranks in my top 20 (I can't limit myself to top 10). I'm hoping that Immortals doesn't fall short.

  4. I think the preview for Immortals, which is visually impressive, will be better than the actual movie, but I'll still go see it. The Fall looks interesting, but I don't think it will have an ending I would enjoy.

  5. Angry Lurker-- Ha, it kind of has that look to it, then you realize that the director is not getting the joke and taking the film way too seriously.

Paul-- Thanks for your comments. The Fall was amazing. It's one of best movies I've ever seen. It's stunning. I'll have to check out your blog.

Alex-- It was like watching a piece of art--sad but beautiful. It did however, have a happy ending. I think you'd like it.

Jennie-- This is definitely a date night movie. You're one of the few who's actually seen The Fall. So many people have heard of it, but haven't seen it.

Isis Rushdan-- I'm with you. I think the preview looks better than the film. I would definitely recommend The Fall. It has a surprisingly happy ending.

  6. Tarsem's is one of my favourite directors ever. I adore his visual style. IMMORTALS will be a film of the year for me :) Adore Henry Cavill and Luke Evans.
I agree with you that Freida is kinda boring and I'm not a fan of Mickey either, but he does play a villain and we aren't supposed to love bad boys :) Or bad bottoxed boys in this case :)))

  7. I'm dying to see this. I know it's going to be over-the-top, but that's exactly why I love Tarsem's movies. I get lost in the spectacle of it. Can't wait to read your review. :)

  8. I heard about The Fall when I read your earlier posts on it a few months ago. I finally saw it tonight. You pretty much know what you're going to get with Tarsem: extraordinary visuals combined with a disjointed story. In this case, he addresses the story weakness by having the visuals be part of deliberately disjointed story that is being made up.

Overall, I liked the movie, although at times I wished the little girl could have understood English better. After one too many "What?"s I was getting a little tired of it.

    Thanks for recommending it.
