Rutro! Ryan Reynolds The New Highlander?

Somewhere a highlander fan is weeping. Variety is reporting that Ryan Reynolds is being serioulsy considered to step into the higlander's role and not lose his head. Highlander is the epic 1986 fantasy film starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown, about a race of sword wielding immortals who could only die if you took their heads.
Apparently destroying the Green Lantern franchise wasn't enough for Ryan. He's already been cast as the lead in Marvel's upcoming superhero flick, Deadpool. Deadpool first appeared in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In Wolverine, Deadpool was transformed by William Stryker into Weapon XI, a mutant killer with multiple mutant powers. Needless to say that movie chewed up, spit out, and proceeded to burn the comic. The Marvel universe has several versions of Deadpool, but I never heard of the one featured in Wolverine. Deadpool aside, Highlander has spawned several feature films and a cult television series and will likley carry higher expectations.

Director of 28 Weeks Later and Intruders, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, will be directing and Highlander veteran Peter S. Davis will be producing. Ryan Reynolds appears to be a great guy. In fact, he's the kind of guy you'd want to have a beer with, but Ryan Reynolds the highlander? I'm not convinced.

  2. I am that Highlander fan that is weeping. I hope he is not the new Highlander, he's just totally not right for the part! Jim Carey would be better! Paris Hilton!! Or even a nobody!!! Anyone but him!!!

  5. I agree. The original film had verve and was fun, this guy, no. At this rate they'll be asking me for the sequel. Ha ha ha

  6. This is a very odd choice. I liked the first one, perhaps the idea is played out.

  7. Film Geek-- I couldn't agree more. Not sure if I'll be watching the new Highlander film and I'm a big Highlander fan. I can't believe they're considering the California sun-kissed Reynolds for this role?

Alex-- Unfortunately. The nail isn't in the coffin for 80s and 90s remakes. Just think we will soon have the 2000-2010 remakes to look forward to. Wait, that's already happened. They're remaking Spider Man.

Bersercules-- So true. This highlander fan shed a few tears as well. I hope they change course for the sake of the franchise.

Libby-- Me neither. Who comes up with this stuff?

Paul-- I agree. I really enjoyed the original film and the series. I don't mind the actor being American, as the brits play American superheroes all the time. My problem is that Ryan Reynolds is a sun-kissed California boy, who is very hard to take seriously. He's also more of a comedic actor.

Corvus-- They haven't quite finished ruining our memories from the 80s just yet, so there's still more to do.

  8. Hmmm, no. I can't see him as the Highlander. I don't know why Hollywood remakes all the old classics. Are they really out of original ideas? I have several if they're buying!

  9. I'm not convinced he'll be a great Highlander. My fave as always been Adrian Paul and while I am glad the franchise is getting a reboot, I'm just so entrenched in the old films and show I'm not sure about it.
