No More Movies Based On Books By Stephanie Meyer

If you haven't had enough of whiny sparkly teenage love triangles then you're in luck. Stephanie Meyer returns to the big screen with her new book, 'The Host.' 'The Host' is about a parasitic alien race called "souls." These souls possess people, completely erase their identities, and subsequently give them sparkly eyes. There had to be something sparkly in there somewhere.
The dual role of Melanie/Wanda is played by Saoirse Ronan ('Hanna'). Wanda is the alien, Melanie is the human. Despite being implanted by Wanda (short for Wanderer), Melanie's human personality survives. Oh and Wanda and Melanie just happen to be in love with two different people. As queen of angsty teenage love triangles, Meyer creates the ultimate love triangle in 'The Host.'

Once again, Meyer appears to have pulled from other great works of fiction. This time she's found inspiration in Jack Finney's groundbreaking novel, The Body Snatchers. The Body Snatchers has inspired numerous science fiction books and films, namely 'The Invasion of the Body Snatchers,' 'The Stepford Wives,' 'Invasion,' and 'The Faculty'.

Supposedly Meyer's 'Twilight Saga' was inspired by Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, and Wuthering Heights. In my opinion Meyer also pulled from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and Natalie Babbit's Tuck Everlasting. Most writers find inspiration from something so that's not surprising, but how many more angsty teen love triangles will we be forced to endure?

I don't much mind Meyer, but when Summit Entertainment cryptically says that they will support Meyer should she decide to go ahead with a 'Twilight' reboot; when Meyer is quoted as saying that she wouldn't mind a reboot of the 'Twilight' series; and when the powers that be consider planning a 'Twilight' reboot as early as 2013, that's when it's time to break the emergency glass, enslave Superman with kryptonite, force him to spin around the world to reverse the earth's rotation, go back in time, and pull all of Meyer's books off the shelves once and for all. A 'Twilight' reboot is my line in the sand.

In defense of Stephanie Meyer, the 'Twilight' series is meant for young adults, but then again so is Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. So why does 'Twilight' earn the disdain of so many? Stephen King and Anne Rice sum it up nicely.

Stephen King has been quoted as saying that "the real difference [between Meyer and J.K. Rowling] is that Rowling is a terrific writer, and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."

Anne Rice told her facebook followers that ”Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun. They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town — anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful.”  

If you still haven't had enough, then you'll be glad to know that the trashy 'Twilight' fan fiction '50 Shades of Grey' has already been purchased by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. Are you excited yet?
