Upcoming Sequels and Remakes

Alamo Drafthouse - Mondo Mystery Movie - Artist Jesse Philips
The sequel machine is efficient yet predictable. Make the original; churn out a few sequels; reboot; rinse; repeat. Sometimes they don't even wait for the sequel, they just go straight to the reboot, i.e. 'Superman Returns' and 'Daredevil.'
Typically I'm not bothered by this form of movie-cannibalism. I have seen my fair share of sequels and remakes and will no doubt continue to. So when I read that the writers of (the admittedly fantastic) 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' started work on the 'Jurassic Park' sequel (in addition to the sequel to 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'), I thought "Ok, sign me up."
But when I read that Michael Bay would soon be birthing yet another awful 'Transformers' film, enough was enough. Then I started to think--exactly how many sequels/remakes (good or bad) can we expect in 2013 and beyond?

Once compiled, the numbers surprised me. Let there be no doubt that Hollywood suffers from a serious lack of imagination. The number of upcoming sequels, prequels, and remakes are staggering. I've tried to put together an accurate list below, but I don't think I've even scratched the surface. At some point I just had to stop. I couldn't type anymore. If you see any I've missed please let me know.

  1. Wow! And I remember when people were complianing about 2002 being the year of the sequal!!

Thanks for this list, you've gotten all that I know of listed!

  2. Impressive piece of research, I think modern culture eats itself. I suppose its easier to pitch a remake than something original. I usually don't watch them. And as for Transformers-yawn...

  3. The idea of another Bridget Jones movie just made me throw up in my mouth a little. The idea of Bridget Jones passing on her neuroses, complete lack of self-esteem, or ability to function without some man's constant reassurances to an innocent child makes me want to call child welfare.
Also, Wolverine 2? Because the first one didn't mutilate my delightful childhood memories enough?

  4. I've been looking forward to the remake of Total Recall for about a year -- at least this one won't have Arnold mugging for the camera. I'm also looking forward to the remake of Red Dawn, though it might be awful. However, I assume they'll come out with a crisp new version of the original, with extra features.

  5. While there were a couple of things there that I would look forward to, I mostly ended up a little depressed after reading all of those.

After the success of The Avengers there's a rumored Justice League movie coming, with the rebooted Superman and Batman.

  6. @Bersecules-- Ha, yeah 2002 has nothing on 2012 or 2013.

@Paul-- Very good analogy of modern culture eating itself--poetic even.

@Brigid Daull Brockway-- I couldn't agree more. Why or why do we need a Briget Jones sequel?

@Mark-- I am worried, very worried for the 'Red Dawn' remake. All the signs point to it being bad...very bad. The jury's still out on 'Total Recall.' I'll still see it anyway.

@Chip-- Yes, this list did seriously depress me. As Paul said above, it's our culture eating itself. Fortunately DC hasn't had many franchises excluding Superman, Batman, and Catwoman. DC has been much more conservative than Marvel so their may be hope for DC.
