Synopsis - 'Ender's Game' is the iconic 1985 scifi novel by American author Orson Scott Card. It was clearly an influence for the re-imagined 'Battlestar Galactica' and the short-lived 90's series 'Space Above and Beyond.' 'Ender's Game' itself was likely influenced by 1959's 'Starship Troopers.' Yes, 'Starship Troopers' was actually a novel before it was a bad 90's cult classic.
When humanity develops the ability to explore the solar system they encounter a hostile insectoid alien race, nicknamed "buggers." After a series of violent wars with the buggers, the human race is hanging on by a thread. In order to prepare for the next and (likely) final conflict, talented children from all over the world are taken to a special school to learn the art of war. The novel's main protagonist is Ender Wiggin, who is taken to this "school" as a young boy.
The book is a staple for any scifi fan's library. If you haven't read it yet, please do before the movie. Books are always better than the movie. Check out the trailer. Harrison Ford stars. Yay!
Saw it yesterday. I'll try to get to the book before the movie's release. Nope, I haven't ever read it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. I, like Alex, have not read the book-though my brother rates the series.
ReplyDeleteOh, you referenced Space Above and Beyond! The best scenes are when they have our favorite sergeant-turned-actor yelling at them.
