Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the voice of Shere Khan in the '
Jungle Book: Origins' film. I have to say...nice vocal casting. I can't think of anyone better cast, except perhaps the sexiest man alive aka
Idris Elba, who has been cast as Shere Khan in a dueling '
Jungle Book' film. I would describe both of their voices as 'growly' sensual butter, so I'm not sure which one I will prefer. I suppose it's just a wait and see type thing.
Disney is doing the Elba version and master physical actor
Andy Serkis is directing the Cumberbatch film. That said, it's Cumberbatch's second time round playing a Khan, so things are looking up for him. But then again, Idris Elba is just so Idris Elba. I just can't. I can't choose. I'll take one of each please.

Adriane Palicki has been cast as Mockingbird on '
Agents of Shield.' No, not the same Mockingbird from 'The Hunger Games' movies. Thank goodness. Click
here to learn more about Marvel superhero Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird. I'm hopeful for Palicki will do well. After all, she briefly played '
Wonder Woman' in the failed NBC pilot.
London's Wildseed Studios' just got it's own
Youtube Channel. I'm sure there will be plenty of scifi shorts to enjoy. They're having a
film festival starting at 10 a.m. GMT (or 11 a.m. BST/6 a.m. EST) on Thursday, August 21. Check them out!

What's up with the casting of Ridley Scott's 'Exodus' film? The casting choices in this film are just so bizarre. These people are portraying ancient Egyptians. Couldn't they at least cast people with a tan? The Pharoh is a blue-eyed Australian (
Joe Edgerton) and
Aaron Paul ('Breaking Bad') is playing Joshua?
Christian Bale is Moses and
Sigourney Weaver plays his mother. I don't know. I could expect this from Hollywood in 1963 when
Elizabeth Taylor was cast as Cleopatra, but in 2014? For some reason, I didn't have an issue with
Russell Crowe as
Noah earlier this year, because biblically speaking, Noah is ethnically ambiguous, but ancient Egyptians are not.
As a director Ridley Scott baffles me at times. When he's good, he's really good ('Alien,' 'Blackhawk Down,' 'Legend,' 'Blade Runner'), but when he's bad, he's really bad (i.e. 'The Counselor,' 'Body of Lies,' 'Hannibal,' 'Robin Hood,' 'Black Rain'). Yes, yes I know it's not a documentary. I said the same thing when people where complaining about the sciency bits in my favorite film of 2013, '
Gravity,' but good casting is very important to me. So next time I see a thread about how
Laurence Fishburne shouldn't play Perry White in 'Superman' or
Michael B. Jordan should play the Human Torch from 'The Fantastic Four'...
Note: To the history buffs-- this era in Egyptian history is before the age of the Ptolemys (or before Alexander the Great invaded Egypt).
I've commented on it in the past.
Lady Sati commented on it a few weeks ago. I'm now convinced of it. Movie posters are terrible these days. Seriously, who is designing this stuff? No creativity, 0, nada, zip.
Cool Stuff
You too can eat fish fingers and custard if you ever find yourself in Beacon, New York. I'm not sure how this '
Doctor Who' themed restaurant is skirting copyright infringement, but just go with it. It's awesome!
Speaking of 'Doctor Who,' check out this cool infographic of all of
Doctor Who's hats over the years.
Make your own lil Groot. This is one of those things that cool for the first 10 minutes and then it's annoying, but still for the first 10 minutes...it's cool.
Cosplay
I want a dancing Groot.
ReplyDeleteRidley Scott directing Exodus. Just scares me.
Two Jungle Book movies? Both intrigue me. Excellent voice choices.
Ha, it's cute. Much cuter than Vin Diesel. yes, I worry about anything directed by Ridley Scott.
DeleteThere's two jungle book movies? I'd heard about Benedict Cumberbatch being cast for one but I had no idea there was another one. One of them is called "Jungle Book: Origins", does that mean that it's going to focus on Mowgli's childhood or how Shere Khan came to despise humans or something?
ReplyDeleteHa, yes. Hollywood seriously lacks creativity these days! I'm not sure what the focus will be. I love the casting though.
DeleteI didn't know there were two Jungle Book movies, either. Very interesting. Exodus??? Yeah, that sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. And the little dancing Groot plant is quite possibly the creepiest looking thing I've ever laid eyes on.
ReplyDeleteHa, I hope not, but I'm not very hopeful when it comes to Ridley Scott films anymore.
DeleteSigourney Weaver can play who ever she wants. She is awesome. @_@
ReplyDeleteHa, I suppose you're right, but an ancient Egyptian?
DeleteYou're so right about Ridley Scott. I have never seen a director with a more pronounced gap between his "good" and his "bad".
ReplyDeleteYes, thanks! I never what kind of film he's going to put out there.
DeleteAfter the Smaug, this should be right up Cumberbatch's alley. DC needs to cast Idris Elba as the Green Lantern John Stewart!
ReplyDeleteHollywood casting doesn't surprise me anymore, you can go no further than casting Depp as a Native American.
I need a new hat, that infographic is terrific! Although I will stay away from the Fez.
Batgirl's new look rocks, and I love how great the cosplayer pulled it off.
Some of these cosplayers are incredible. I thought the same thing about Cumberbatch. He has a beautiful voice. I could just listen to him all day.
DeleteYes, I suppose Hollywood casting shouldn't surprise me anymore. I believe Deep is partially Native American, at least that's what I read a while back. But still the casting for that movie was very strange.
I think Idris would make a great John Stewart/Green Lantern. Much better than Ryan Reynolds.
Exodus just looks terrible. I think Scott should take a break for few years. He just doesn't seem to have it in him anymore.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is up with Exodus? What is Scott thinking? Perhaps he needs to go Indie for a few years. Go back to the basics then come back. Admittedly, he still does scifi well. I thought 'Prometheus' was good, but the Counselor was crap.
DeleteAren't there a ton of underemployed actors who would love the voice roles in all these cartoon "movies"? Do the companies that make them, feel like they need the voices of stars to make people go see them.
ReplyDeleteI'm not very excited about Exodus... Thanks for all the info!
I agree! There are so many people waiting to be discovered! With films like this they could definitely use more unknown vocal actors b/c the audience (namely children) don't really know who Elba and Cumbebatch are anyway!
DeleteA good cause Ms. Mariah! It's mice to see Palicki back on TV since her Wonder Woman pilot isn't nearly as bad as people think. It's ridiculous that Egyptian films are always cast with white actors. I'm a huge fan of the period, but I'm glad Fox canceled the Ancient Egypt drama 'Hieroglyph' since it was the same thing. I miss John Alvin, who did the elegant E.T. poster.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see her return to tv. Yes, I know what's up with this casting??? I heard about that show 'Hieroglyph.' Glad it got cancelled.
DeleteOh my goodness... you actually just described the perfect casting choice. Perfect. Alexander Siddiq would be perfect as Pharoh. Oded would be a perfect Moses.
ReplyDeleteHa, ha no! Please tell me they're not doing another movie set in Egypt.
I can think of a better voice: Alan Rickman. By the way, Cumberbatch does a spot-on imitation of Rickman at
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnbN3Pya_AM
Hi Mark! Alan Rickman would have been perfect. Cumberbatch actually reminds me a lot of Rickman in so many ways.
DeleteAmazing voice casting with Benedict Cumberbatch, I actually couldn't think of anyone who could so it better. That is until you mentioned Alan Rickman, now I just don't know!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I wanted to let you know that we at Flick Chicks have nominated you for the One Lovely Blogger Award, details are here http://goo.gl/j0rnU7. Love reading your blog so it was a no brainer. Enjoy :-)
